What does 'colour' mean for a colourless diamond?

Diamond colour grades measure the absence of yellow or brown tint in a stone, not the presence of decorative colour. The GIA scale runs D (completely colourless) to Z (visibly tinted); IGI, which certifies all Valquère lab-grown diamonds, uses the same D-to-Z system. In practice, the difference between a D and an F is invisible to the naked eye, while the price gap between those grades can be significant. Lab-grown diamonds are produced under controlled conditions, so achieving D-to-F colour is more consistent than in mined stones, and the cost premium for near-colourless grades is proportionally smaller. For most settings, a G or H colour lab-grown diamond delivers a white appearance at a noticeably lower price than equivalent D-F stones. If the setting is yellow gold, an I or J grade reads as colourless against the metal. Prioritise cut quality first; a well-cut stone masks minor tint far more effectively than moving up one colour grade.
