What does gradient design mean in jewellery?

Gradient design is a stone-setting arrangement where lab-grown diamonds are sized progressively, typically with the largest stone at the centre and each subsequent stone stepping down in diameter toward the clasp or band end. The size difference between adjacent stones is calculated precisely, often spanning a range from around 0.03 ct at the edges to 0.20 ct or more at the centre, creating a smooth visual taper rather than a uniform line. This layout draws the eye inward and gives a piece more visual weight at its focal point without adding bulk to the overall silhouette. In a gradient tennis bracelet, for example, the effect reads as a continuous sweep of light rather than a repeating pattern. Lab-grown diamonds are well suited to this design because consistent colour and clarity grades, such as F-E colour and VS clarity, are easier to match across multiple stones. When comparing pieces, check that the grade spread across all stones is stated, not just the centre stone.
