What is a solitaire ring?

A solitaire ring is a ring featuring one center stone, with no side stones competing for attention. The design places the entire visual weight on that single gem, which makes cut quality and proportions more consequential than in multi-stone settings. The solitaire format is also the most common choice for engagement rings because the setting is relatively simple to resize and the style does not date. In a solitaire setting, the prong count directly shapes how the diamond reads: four prongs pull the outline toward a squarer, more angular silhouette, while six prongs soften the same stone into a rounder form. Both configurations work across all standard lab-grown diamond cuts, and the prongs are positioned to maximise light entry from above, which directly affects the stone's brightness and contrast. The choice between four and six prongs is partly aesthetic and partly practical, as six prongs offer slightly more edge protection on round brilliants. Pendant necklaces and earrings can also carry the solitaire label when built around a single stone. If you are buying a centre stone above 1 ct, a solitaire setting is the most direct way to evaluate what that diamond actually looks like, since nothing around it provides visual distraction.
