What is a point in diamond weight measurement?

A diamond point is one hundredth of a carat, the standard subdivision used to express weight below one full carat. One carat equals exactly 0.2 grams, so one point equals 0.002 grams. IGI certificates for lab-grown diamonds record weight to two decimal places in carats, making points a practical shorthand for everyday conversation. A 50-point lab-grown diamond, for instance, weighs 0.50 ct and measures approximately 5.2 mm in diameter across the table. Points matter most when comparing stones smaller than 1.00 ct, where small differences in weight can shift both price and visible size noticeably. Because lab-grown diamonds are priced differently from mined stones, a 70-point lab-grown diamond can offer the visual presence of a larger stone at a fraction of the cost of its mined equivalent. Knowing the point weight lets you compare options precisely rather than relying on vague size descriptions.
