Which metal should I choose for my ring?

Ring bands are made from a small set of proven precious metals: gold (yellow, white, or rose) and platinum are the standard choices for fine jewelry. Gold alloys used in fine rings run from 14kt to 18kt, with 18kt offering higher purity and a richer color; platinum runs approximately 95% pure and is denser than gold. Both metals are hypoallergenic at these grades, making them suitable for sensitive skin. The metal choice affects more than aesthetics: white gold pairs cleanly with the colorless grades common in IGI-certified lab-grown diamonds, while yellow or rose gold can complement warmer stone tones. If you want color beyond the diamond itself, lab-grown stones can be paired with sapphires, rubies, or emeralds at price points that leave room for a higher-quality center stone. Match the metal to your wearing habits as much as your taste, since platinum resists scratching better over time.
