What is a coloured diamond?

A coloured diamond is a diamond whose crystal lattice contains trace elements or structural irregularities that absorb light selectively, producing a visible body colour. In lab-grown diamonds, these conditions are precisely replicated: nitrogen produces yellow, boron produces blue, and specific growth conditions can yield pink or green stones. IGI grades lab-grown coloured diamonds on the same colour intensity scale used for mined stones, from Faint through Fancy Vivid. Intensity is the primary driver of value in coloured diamonds, not origin. A Fancy Intense yellow lab-grown diamond carries the same grading weight as its mined equivalent, at a fraction of the cost. For buyers, this means access to colour grades that would be financially out of reach in mined form. If colour saturation matters to your design, lab-grown opens the range considerably without requiring a compromise on certification or cut quality.
