What is a pear cut diamond?

A pear cut diamond is a hybrid shape combining the round brilliant and marquise cuts into a single tapered point at one end and a rounded base at the other. IGI certifies this shape under fancy cut grades, with symmetry being the most critical quality factor: the two halves of the rounded base must mirror each other precisely. Because the outline narrows to a single tip, the stone reads larger per carat than many other shapes, making it a practical choice for buyers prioritising visual presence. Worn on a ring with the point toward the fingernail, the shape creates a lengthening effect on the finger. As a pendant, the tapered end becomes the natural hanging axis. The tip is the most structurally vulnerable part of the stone, so any setting should include a prong or bezel cap covering that point to prevent chipping.
